My dad just bought a pontoon boat with a 1974 evinrude lark 40hp it does not charge the battery. Can anyone tell me if this motor has a charging system? If so how would I go about trouble shooting the problem...Thanks in advance.

I don't know if it is similar but I have a 1964 40 H.P. and it has a small belt that wraps around the flywheel on top and the alternator. It could possibly be your belt has broken.

remove all the wires one at a time, and clean the stud, the wire connector, and then spray it with silicone when you put it back together

do this for all of the wires one at a time and you have ruled out bad connections, also make sure the cable terminals are clean and tight (I am a big fan of a light coat of never sieze, I dont know if its a good idea for electrical, but I never seem to have a problem with it - it bothers me just a little that there is lead in the mix, but I truly HATE busted bolts and screws, anything that I have EVER put together with never sieze comes apart, even trailer shackles from a gazillion years ago, lol)

(see JB, I can leave a clean and tight comment alone!)

Also, make sure you have a good battery, these systems arent sea going dynamos by any means

that and the previously posted comment about the belt, thats all I know

Thanks to everyone. This motor does not have the belt around the flywheel. therefore I can only assume that the generator either never was there or has been taken off. Please let me know if this sounds sensible. And thanks again.

Probaly what happened is the generator went out and it was too expensive for someone to replace and they just took it off and made sure they had a charged battery. That can be done but you just better make sure you have a spare battery or have a pull cord to start the motor with if it goes dead.

I forgot to mention that if it was me though and I had the money to do it I would go ahead and put an alternator back on it. Then you don't have to worry about keeping a spare battery with you.

your motor doesnot use current off the battery except for cranking . if it cranks good a bettery will last all day fishing . run every thing else on another battery .you could put a solar charger on the boat .
