Here we go....new to the forum and new to boat ownership. Im 42 years old and this will be my first boat... (ready to dive in wallet first..lol)... I recenty aquired a 1974 Glastron ??? Got a great price on it...motor seems good too.
Not sure of the model of the boat which is my first question. I obviously need the model to locate parts and such and would like to be able to find a picture or two of the boat in original and/or finished condition...
The floor has a few soft spots doesnt feel like anything major so Im thinking I will save that project for late fall this year.. in the mean time I am going to do some cosmetic work on the boat and in the next few weeks try yo put her in the water so I will have a better knowledge of what all it will need and what all I want.
Here is a few pics after I got her home and started clearing it out of all the miscellaneous parts that were in it ( or not in it..lol)
Thanks
Mitch

Hello Mitch you have joined a great forum with knowledgeable helpful bunch of guys that are willing to help guys like you and me. They tell you like it is because they have been there and know what they are talking about. From what I have been told and have found out boats rot from the bottom up if you have soft spots there may be worse things under neath. good luck and have fun

Re: 1974 Glastron ??

Hey there Rookie. I always liked the look on the glastron. I have a '74 ebbtide and they are very similar boats. I too purchased it as my first boat when I was 42 (i'm 44 now) so I'm right there with you.
FYI, I used my boat for a season and started feeling soft spots near the rear of the boat. Now i'm in a full demo/restore which you can do if you're handy. Just be sure you know what you're getting into before you do anything because once you start cutting, it's pretty much a done deal. Generally speaking, if where there's smoke, there's fire so if you have soft spots, it's likely that you have rot going on under the deck. It's not guaranteed but likely.
You have come to the right place though. Lots of folks to help you out here. Unfortunately, I can't really give any glassing advice other than what I know from others on here as i have completed the demo but have yet to mix up any resin. It will happen soon i hope. I'm actually supposed to receive my first 5 gallon pail today.

Hey, That looks like an old GT-15, or 16, as in 15' or 16'. I could be mistaken, but I thought they had a split center deck? I think it's vintage 1968-69. The hull design is a bit better, & more stable then the old tipsy 16' Glastron deep vee.

Welcome to iBoats!
There should be a HIN plate on her some place. Maybe back on the transom or up under the dash or around the throttle control. If you can find that and post a pic we can tell you what you got. The 70 HP Johnson will have a model# stamped on her somewher on the mounting bracket as well. She's a Great motor and as long as the cylinders have compression over 100# she'll be good to go. Raise the Motor up high and then bounce HARD on the leg and have someone check the transom to see if it flexes even a tiny bit. It should NOT. Soft floor as previously stated usually indicates problems below especially on these older boats. If in fact he stringers and transom are in bad shape, you should think twice before you venture to long and hard out onto open water.

Re: 1974 Glastron ??

Thanks for the welcome guys...I have no doubt and have already surendered to the fact that Ill be needed to replace the stingers and ect. Have done some extensive reading on it, but again Ill wait till late fall to tear it apart so as not to rush myself through it.
Mercurymang...Id be interested in keeping up with your project..I would think they would be really similar. I have the numbers off the back of the boat..is there anyway to identify what model my boat actually is?? GLA28962M747. All I know is its a 15 foot Glastron....
I consider myself pretty handy and certainly dont mind the work...Im looking forward to it....Ive already planted an additional money tree in the back yard cause based on everything I have read...Im gonna need it..lol

Based on your HIN, I believe your boat was MFG in December of 74.;)

I love the Glastrons, and thats an awesome motor. That enice is newer than the boat. According to the graphics on the engine and the tell-tale, it's a late '77 or '78 for sure. Do you know the condition of the engine?

Thanks guys... that V-156 Sporster is the closest Ive seen yet except the bow seat on mine has the seat running short ways (width) instead of two seats running long ways ( length) .... and the nose on mine looks a little "sharper" ..well at least to me..lol.. in its current condition...
Who can also tell me abouot bilge pumps?? I know what they are and what they are supposed to do...but does every boat come with them...and where and how do I locate mine or tell if im missing it or not??

Bilge pumps are in the bilge, the lowest area in the back of the boat there will be a hose going to a dump on the side of the boat usually and there will be two wires going to it.
