Re: 1974 Johnson 6HP model 6R74C

Well, That was some what encouraging. My compression gauge I think was very inexpensive from A Zone or wal-mart. Just a little short hose bout a foot long with a gauge on the other end. I don't know much about calibrating it. The model number on that little half-dollar silver round plate on the block does say 6R74C. I've about decided to just get on with it and order the parts. I'll just forget about the block rebuild for now. I'll take the chance.. That's what I did anyway when I bought it... Thank You...Fishermanms

6R74C is a '74 so the bracket and motor match years, anyway.

Onward and upward.

Bill... I just gathered up some left over treated 2X4's, saw, drill, square, pencil, tape measure, 3 1/2" wood screws, stool, fan, cigarettes, big glass lemonade, wife ( to hand me stuff and hold stuff ). Dreamed up something in my head stupid simple and build it. It's 3' wide, 3' tall, and 21 3/4" deep. I made it wide so I can have room to work on it and to also mount a hand operated electric trolling motor. Standing it fits me just fine to work on it and sitting I can put something under it or work on the lower end. Click on the attachment to see pics. The only thing different I might add, is to secure the top 2X4 the motor mounts on each end to keep it from twisting. But its plenty strong.

Is the roll pin a necessary item? do's it drive anything in the power unit? I pulled mine out not knowing it had a pin fitted and bent it on exit. I would like to assemble the lower case and was wondering what purpose this pin served.

Yes, you are referring to the pin on the top of the drive shaft? That is there to press the seal up against the bottom of the crankshaft. So, if you bent it, you better get a new one. I made that mistake once myself. LOL Fortunately, it's not an expensive mistake.

Hey, for a 1974 6hp Johnson 80 to 85psi is good compression numbers. They have been known to run decently in the psi range of 60's.

Here is a very informative link about your motor and will help you remove the carb and clean it. I think you already read Reeves article on setting your carb and adjusting. If your have problems with your fuel pump, either replace it or a get a kit. Iboats sells a good Sierra replacement for about 50 bucks or so.

A good read about your motor

If you have good coils, points and condenser, then just clean off the points and reset at 0.020 with a feeler guage. Or a least keep the coils and replace the points and condenses price is fair enough here on iboats.

Here is a electronic parts diagram for your motor.

Good luck

To answer your question: The pin is there to hold in the upper seals, and the seals are necessary so the pin is necessary.

I think it's actually cool to see old threads come up. :D You get to see replies from past members you don't see much of anymore. Kinda like a re-union of sorts.

LMAO!! Oh well, no biggie. I don't know what the big deal is, on reviving old threads. I mean....come on guys....it's not a big deal. Worse things can and will happen in our life times. Like our motor could die out in the middle of the lake. :D DOH!! As long as you don't go off topic, no harm done. ;)

No biggie. I only get slightly annoyed when the "New" problem doesn't match the original title, or the poster is trying to answer a question posted years ago. I think that continuing an old thread with the same exact problem is a good thing.....

Re: 1974 Johnson 6HP model 6R74C

Fishermanms, or anyone else who might know,

I'm looking at buying the same "1974 johnson 6HP model 6R74C" but need to figure out some basic information... rather than starting a new post I figured someone here might know...

first, is this outboard a short shaft? the guy told me over the phone that it measured 17.5" from the top of the mount to cavitation plate; which, assuming he measured right would put it about 2" longer than a typical "short shaft" motor. I am looking to put this on a 12' jon boat with a 15.5" transom so I assume this would be ok.

also, is this motor ok to run in salt water assuming proper maintenance is followed?

The wants 200 bucks for it so I think thats fair.

Thanks for the help... this is my first post!
