I have a 1974 johnson outboard control that I have lost the key on. How do I go about finding another one? Some people have told me to look for a two digit number on the control panel but I don,t find one. Any suggestions? |Thanks

Most of the key switches has a code number stamped right next to the keyhole. A "real" locksmith can make a key from that number if he can figure out who made the lock. (Hint: Pollock was one such maker) Or a dealer can order one but that'll take awhile. If there is no number, a "real" locksmith can still make a key by taking it apart. Too bad there aren't more locksmiths around anymore. The kid that makes keys at wally world isn't a locksmith.

Thank you very much for the reply, but I didn,t find that code near the switch. What should I be looking for ? I was told that it was a two digit number on the key switch but I could not find it. Maybe I am a moron but it was nowhere to be seen. |Any suggestions?

often the number will wear away, its simply a 2 digit number ,very small type, maybe a magnifiying glass will help ,it would be located on the plastic part that receives the key, many mechanics have a master se,you might be lucky to get a guy to try fitting a few keys in,67 is a popular one,or you can remove the key switch which might be a bear of a job if its in a control box

Hey, Thanks. I thought that I might have seen something on the plastic part but I was'nt sure. I was looking more towards the metal part of it. I will get a magnifying glass and take a look. Thank you.

Johnson only made (i think) 21 variations of keys. Go to the local marina they may let you take the set and you can try them until you find the one that fits. Then you go back with their set and they'll sell you the one you need.
