I started my 1974 Merc 115 last week for the first time this year. I had muffs for water. I did not get any water out of the exhaust holes in the back of the cowl. I did have a good strong stream from the pee hole. I put a barrel under the motor and I get some water spray from the exhaust holes, but not like I had last year. Does that mean I need to replace the impeller? The previous owner changed it before I bought it 4 yrs ago and I only have 2-3 hours on the motor after that. Most of that has been idling in a barrel while I was doing other work on the boat. Thanks for any help.

The square exhaust holes, high up on the midsection, may or may not spit water. They are really for exhaust relief, when the motor is in the water. Water should come out of the prop, telltale and the grating above the antiventilation plate. If no water or hot water there, you need waterpump work.

That motor does not have an overheat warning horn.---Nor does it have a shutdown on overheat function.----It is due for a new impeller !!!

If it were Mine I would drop the lower unit and check and replace the water pump impeller for sure
