Hi to all!

A little confusion in regards to whether the gear shift should be in NEUTRAL or FORWARD in the inititial stages of lower gear preparation.
I know that I have to shift my engine into forward just to get it out of water.(horizontal) So, once it's out I then have to shift to NEUTRAL as required by the manual.
thanks

Alex

Alex I like to remove and install the units in rev. as they seem less likely to jump by the detent

Hi Laddie!

What is the purpose of the gear being in any position? Does it make for easier removal and installation of the drive shaft?
You claim that it actually makes it easier if it's in reverse. The detent is the "key" as it is referred to in the manual?
Thanks

Alex

It lets you turn the driveshaft for reinstallion of the unit, in fwd. it is very easy for the shiftshaft to turn and become misaligned

Let me get this straight, after moving the gear into forward in order to tilt the engine I put in reverse and let it stay there. I don't have to manipulate anything except perhaps rotate the drive shaft in order to align it.
Thanks Laddies

Alex

Crem:

I put mine (a 1980 version) in fwd and left it there. When I dropped the bottom end to replace the impeller I rotated the shfter shaft back to neutral and even reverse for one reason or another, but before I put it back together I made sure the lower end was back in fwd. Doing it this way let me rock the prop back and forth to assure the splines on the drivehaft lined up. and it "forced the alignment of my shifter shaft as well. It went together slicker than owl snot.

Good luck!
Nikko

Laddies claims that the key is a concern when the gear is in forward and that being in reverse it is easier to overcome the obstacle

Alex

If one did find evidence of water in the gear lube which offending washer or gasket would be most likely to be the culprit?
Thanks

Alex

Re: 1974 MERC500 IMPELLER

My concern is the basic impeller kit that one gets. If the water leakage issue is addressed with the use of the above mentioned kit then everything is fine and dandy, It just seems that when you have the gear housing apart you might as well look after all the details

Alex
