1974 mercury 200 charing circuit

I have a 1974 20hp Mercury 200 Ser 4060956 Outboard. This motor has electric start but no charging circuit. I have located a lighting stator that is called out for this motors serial number but this motor was built with two types of ignitions, different stators, triggers, switch boxes. Will this lighting stator work with both ignition types. Can a lighting stator be used to charge a battery? If so how do I wire it to charge a battery?

A 74 20hp #4060956 has a switchbox 332 4911, the next ignition did not start until mid 76 with the 339 6222 and final ignition (stator changed too.).

Your lighting stator should be a 74367 common to both. And you need a rectifier, 62351. My parts list show a different rectifier for serial 9122765 and up, Belgium, of 75076, but hopefully you do not have that.

Looks like the two yel/red off the lighting stator go to the rectifier and the single red off the rectifier goes to the starter solenoid and then ultimately to the + on the battery. This is with the 62351 rectifier.

Will this be the same for my '74 Mercury 402? I am also missing the 2 yellow wires from the stator. My motor is Belgium-build, so does this mean I have a problem if need to charge my batery? What do I need to modify the motor to charge a batery?

Sorry as I do not have a parts list for a 40hp so I can not say. You can get a parts list direct from Mercury.

For the 20hp, the 75076 voltage regulator had two wires going to the lighting harness as opposed to 1 red, so I would not think this is a big problem.

If you get the right parts, hooking up a 40hp should not be a problem.
