Re: 1974 Montgomary ward 10hp help
Hey, I'm in the same boat...I just got a M-W Sea King 10hp and need to replace the pulley spool. Thanks for the advice, I'll check with the Merc dealer.
I bought this on craigslist.com from someone who had it in his garage since 1974. It had perhaps 1 or 2 tankfuls of gas run through it. But, all the nylon plastic parts on the starter are age-cracking.
I replaced the fuel pump diaphragm and impeller, took the carb apart and cleaned everything inside, and got it running. Then, I noticed the starter rope was fraying. The little black nylon pulley that the rope passes around cracked apart, which scraped the starter rope. The pulley axle is a spring pin. You have to pull the flywheel and ignition plate (held on by 4 screws) so you can then use a pin punch to knock the spring pin down out of its hole. It appears to be a 3/16 (.187) dia pin. I'm replacing the pin with a homemade solid pin that I can replace without pulling the flywheel each time.
It's tricky, but you can remove the starter and re-install it. To install, just need to hold all the parts together while rewinding the starter spring, aligning everything, lining up the bolt holes, and installing the bolts.
Thank You
