Hello folks,

When I was towing my 1974 carver to the river the outdrive was lifted. When I got there, it was down and slipping...I could pick it up and down. Usually it would stay locked. The lift/down button either way just spins the motor.
Is there anything that is common to these outdrives that would cause this? In reverse the od kept popping up..forward was ok. Is this a solnoid or a clutch pack problem? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

thanks!

Hey Tobycat,
Sounds like you're low on fluid in your tilt/trim. ;)
Backlash

Re: 1974 OMC outdrive

Tobycat,
It might the "hammer blow coupling". This is what allows the lower unit to "break away" upon impact it keep it from ripping away from the boat!

I do not know about the 74 omc outdrive, but my 78 has a electric motor that drives the tilt. Its attached via the coupling to a worm gear, thru the intermedate unit to a clutch pack assembly which is attached to the tilt gear. It might be the clutch assembly or the worm gear as well?

just thinking outloud...
