Hello folks,

When I was towing my 1974 carver to the river the outdrive was lifted. When I got there, it was down and slipping...I could pick it up and down. Usually it would stay locked. The lift/down button either way just spins the motor.
Is there anything that is common to these outdrives that would cause this? In reverse the od kept popping up..forward was ok. Is this a solnoid or a clutch pack problem? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

thanks

Re: 1974 omc outdrive

I have a 76 OMC, my lift motor was out when I got it. There is a pin inside of the shaft that I am told breaks. Of course you have to take out the whole inside of the tilt trim up/down gears and all that stuff to get to it. There is also supposed to be a clutch in there that is supposed to avoid damage to your drive if it hits something. You may want to check that out. What part of california are you in? I am in So. Cal. by Puddingstone.

Hi Tobycat,What you are discribing sounds like a loose chutch pack to me. On some of the newer units there was a plug on the stbd, side of the lift mechanism that could be removed and it could be tightened up with an allen wrench.
Might be worth checking.

Re: 1974 omc outdrive

The tilt clutch which raises and lowers the outdrive has many shims in there. All held together by a big snap ring. To increase tension add shims. It could be snap ring came off. Mine is a 1980 series 400 and I actually removed two shims because it was too hard to tilt up. Even after I took out two shims mine still does not kick up up on a hard reverse. I may some day take out two more. It function is to save the outdrive if you hit something like a rock, log or whale. Also might want to make sure it ha right oil in it. Mine uses 30 weight motor oil.
