Re: 1974 OMC Stringer Tilt Issues

So I cleaned all the grounds and contacts on the 2 solenoids as long as the actual switch. I am now getting a response everytime tilting the drive up against the stop, but nothing going down. No click, nothing. Trim motor engages right away when clicking up.

Any idea which solenoid is the one that does the down as you are looking at the engine towards the back of the boat?

I do not have select trim or anything so there are only 2 back there. Its a bit togh to do myself as the switch is up front and the action is back stern.

I am guessing, fuse, switch, motor are all ok, since up works everytime, butmaybe something I missed in down solenoid?

there are two fuses, one for up and one for down, they should be located on top left of engine next to main wiring connector

I think I got it. I isolated the down solenoid. The lead from the trim switch was providing juice, and the hot lead on the solenoid(the one connected to the up solendoid) was hot as well.

When trimming down, switch provided juice but circuit to tilt motor within solenoid never completed.

I jumped the terminals and the drive went right down. I am picking up replacement solenoid at Napa tomorrow morning.

Good catch Mahoney! I know it's a pain in the a$$ trying to troubleshoot electrical problems by yourself. I had to do my tilt AND trim systems so I feel your pain! 2 new solenoids, one used motor and one I rebuilt. Throw in some corroded wires just for sh*ts and giggles. :|

I ended up doing alot of my troubleshooting with some 8' long wires with gator clips so I could see DDM while at the helm. Or a looong stick from a tree in the backyard to hit the switches while by the engine! :$8) Hey, you saw my screen name right?! LOL

Thank god for those big digital readout voltmeters!

Thanks again guys, I hate electrical crap, and I will let you know how the new solenoid works out.
