Well I've owned the boat for a year and a half and have decided to look for where the leaks are coming from. I yanked out the floor, it was "spongy" in more than a few spots. Then I put the boat in the lake and jumped in to mark all the leaks. I found that most of the leaks were around where the trailer rollers came into contact with the boat which kinda makes sense. I just finished wire brushing the rivets and such when I came across a hole about 1/8'' diameter in the hull. it looks like the aluminum had some acid or something corrosive perhaps in the area of the hole. I also found more areas on the hull with these corrosion marks. YIKES. how should I fix these "weakend" areas? Pics will be coming as soon as I figure out how!

Most of the tinny guys on here Re-buck the leaky rivets, wire brush everything, wipe down with aceteone, and then coat everything with an epoxy product called Gluvit or Coat-It. Since they are both epoxy based they will need to be coated with something to get UV protection. Small holes can have a rivet placed in em, or some JB Weld seems to do the trick too. Do a forum search for Gluvit or Fixing leaks in Aluminum boats and you will surely find a plethara of threads to give you lots of reading and information.

Either drill it and rivet it, or wire brush it & JB Weld it then Gluvit over everything when she's all clean and "Purdy"!!!!

old rotten plywood. should be alright yet for templates.
I'm finding it difficult to source out the proper rivets for the hull. anybody have the specs for the rivets that should be used?

I'd like to purchase some gluvit and I was wondering if 1 quart would be enough for a 16' boat?

Thanks jIordered a box of rivets, so as soon as they get here I'll start replacing the bad ones and re bucking the lose ones. Do I apply the 5200 before installing the rivets or coat them after?

Re: 1974 SC 16' Hull Repair project

well i just got the boat lifted off the trailer and now its off to the welding shop to get some brackets mounted to convert the trailer from rollers to bunks! we travel on a lot of gravel roads up here to get to the lakes and I found that all the leaky rivets were right where the boat came into contact with the rollers.

After a helping hand from the FIL we got all the rivets that needed replacing, replaced. The gluvit is also curing right now! this next week I hope to insure the trailer now that it's back from the welding shop, and take the boat to lake and test for leaks before installing the new floor.

Sm - sounds like great progress. Good luck w/ the next leak test. My last one was successful, I had lots of leaks, Gluvit is my next step.

So I picked up 3 sheets of 3/4" marine grade plywood! Now I have to track down some styrofoam, or pool noodles.
