I have a what I believe to be a 1974 Sears Ted Williams 4.5 hp outboard. I need to change the lower unit gear oil since it has not been done since I got the motor last summer. Another thread says to use 90W gear lube oil. Could anyone please explain what would be the best way to accomplish this task, since I have never done it before. The model number is 217-59460, also a previous thread stated that the spark plug is Rj14yc, is this correct for my motor. Thanks

Welcome Koeska, use only marine 90w gear oil and you have the correct spark plug, Autolite no. 86 will work also and the Champion RJ12C wich is common on alot of small engines works fine as well.

to fill the lower some lay the outboard on it side and fill from the bottom (big screw) untill it comes out the vent (top little screw)

Thank you MrCrabs for the information. This has been a good little outboard for my 1974 Sears 12' V aluminum. the only complaint I have with it is that the choke is a little touchy, but once you get it going it goes. Way better than oaring or depending on the electric trolling motor to get me to my fishing spots
