Hi, I recently aquired a TOB 25 Tanaka. My question is how do you fill the gear housing with lube? There is no filler screw like the the ones shown on tanaka usa's website. I removed the two housing screws to take the prop and driven gear off and drain what was left of the nasty old lube, but how to fill it back up with the correct amount baffels me. I got to thinking, maybe you don't use 90W at all and just pack it with grease and what came out of mine was just liqufied. All the other owners manuals for the TOB 12 and the TOB 300 call for 90W and show a fill hole. If anybody here has one of these 25's without a fill hole please help me out.Thanks.

Re: 1974 Tanaka LU question

Remove prop, 2 bolts that hold the cover on, remove cover, refill with fresh 90Wt. gear lube, replace cover, bolts, prop. My Tanaka has a tiny little drain/fill hole on the cover but it's not good for much, easier to just remove entire cover. And while you have the cover off you can clean/inspect gear box, seals, prop shaft. If you don't have a new gasket just use silicone in place to seal. Good Luck!

Re: 1974 Tanaka LU question

Thanks Robert. That makes total sense. Now the question remains how much 90W? No capacities are given in the manuals. "fill till oil is level with filling hole" which dosn't exist in my case. How about me just filling it till it covers the pinion gear in the hoizonal position and when I tilt the leg upright the housing should be about half to 3/4 full. Do you think that would be ok? Or should I fill that sucker right up to the gasket surface?

Just fill it up to cover your gears or "almost full", it doesn't really matter as long as the gears and bearings are covered in oil. No problem!

Thanks Robert.That's what I'll do.
While I got you here. Is there anything I should be aware of with this motor? Any problems you've had with yours? It looks pretty simple. One of those it either runs, or it dosn't things.
