I have a 135hp Evinrude that may need to have the water pump rebuilt. Obviously I would rather take care of this early than have to replace an engine or pistons. Is there a way I can tell if replacing the pump cogs and other parts is a necessity without tearing into the engine? If I do have to tear into the engine, how big of a pain in the butt is it?

Thanks

You just need to drop the lower unit and might as well replace the impeller at a minimum while you have it torn down. The hardest part is getting the shift linkage loose under the carbs. A swivel socket will help. Also need to make sure that you get all of the bolts out especially the one under the trim tab. If it won't come apart don't force it there is probably still a bolt in it. You can probably do it in under an hour unless you run into other problems.

The job will be even easier if you have the parts catalog to see where everything goes. If you need the diagrams you can print them from either the BRP parts catalog site or the Shop Evinrude site:

The shift rod is moved by a bellcrank. The screw mentioned above is the fulcrom and must be unloosened enough to spread the 2 fingers of the bellcrank to release the shift rod.

Be sure to mark the trim tab so that you can put it back at the same setting.

Note the direction that the swivel barrel at the top of the shift rod is facing.
