The manifold comes off without doing anything to the reeds and the reeds are easy to examine/check in place. I cannot think of any good reason to remove them unless you find damage or are going to change the reeds.

If you take the reed cages off you have to be very careful in replacing them so that the screws don't come loose and get ingested; if that happens, you will have much more work to do.

The outer holes on the flywheel are blind, about 3/5" deep.

I interpret that as meaning I do not need to get the leaf assembly gaskets unless I replace the assemblies.

How the heck do you put that much pressure on the bolt without it flying out of the hole and creating some really messed up knuckles?

If it's too scary, go for the block of wood on the prop. It's your choice.

Practice, and of course, having a bolt that is large enough. Remember, it is not as much pressure as you think; after all, it is leverage.

Dang Physics:eek:

I ain't scared!!

BTW - Just rented an HB Puller for $99. Gets me 45 days with a 100% refund on its return. Can't beat that! Just ordered my single intake gasket and will have at it as soon as the gasket arrives.

Now I've got a good excuse to run up to Sears and pick out a Daddy' Day gift. I'm thinking a brand new shiny torque wrench!!! And perhaps if I'm a good boy I'll get a 1-5/16" socket. I think I have one, but need to check.

I've pulled the flywheel bolt off and can see the key easily and it is right where it should be so it is not sheared.

I still want to pull off the flywheel to inspect my timing and stator parts but have run into an issue (what are the odds). But the three holes appear to be partially stripped at least the top few threads so I cannot easily tell exactly what the threads are.

Are they 5/16th-18 or 20's, or 24's? The puller came with 5/16th-18 but I am not sure they fit. Don't want to strip out those holes any further.

The three holes are still 5/16 fine unless someone forced an 18 in there. Fine is 24/inch on a 5/16 bolt.

That looks like exactly what happend 'cuz the threads are all screwed up (hah-hah) about 1/3-1/2 way down. Not too sure what I can do now.

Can I put some penetrating oil on the shaft to help bust it loose?

I need to get some 5/16th-20's now, my puller kit came with just about everything but. Maybe one of their metrics will fit.

Any advice before I make matters worse?

Get a tap and clean the threads up.

After you chase the threads, measure the depth and mark the bolts so that you take them all the way down.

BTW, any full service truck repair terminal should carry a wide assortment of #8 bolts.

Believe it or not, I've been getting my bolts at Lowe's (If you don't have them there, they are like Home Depot but more tailored to homeowners). They have a decent range of grade 5 and 8 hardware now. A buck a bolt for grade 8 1.5" x 5/16" may be steep but worth not driving around.

Just tapped out a hole in my intake manifold now I am going to have to buy another tap (kit I bought didn't only went up to 1/4". I imagine 5/16-fine won't even be a common size for taps. I never know what I am going to find with this engine. Previous owner(s) really performed a lot of shade-tree work.

I just read a post by TD on pulling the flywheel off. Good stuff. Waiting overnight and tapping the center pivot screw were two things I would not have thought of. Imagine, waiting overnight for something like that to pop off. Mr. iwombat, this is where that hammer I referred to comes into play heh, heh, heh;)

Well it turned out harder than I thought to find some 5/16-24's that were grade 8. Even the bolt store down the street (yes an actual bolt store) didn't have them in 8's. At least not with a hex head. Had to go with an round-head and some washers but it should do.
