1975 140 Mercruiser wont go in Neutral

I have a 140 Mercruiser on my Glastron and the shifting is a little rough, I get a thump when I put it into reverse or forward and sometimes it will go into neutral. Any help is gladly appreciated.

Ayuh,... Yer description is abit vague, but I'm guessin' it might need a new lower shift cable...
