Great looking SS is it a rebuild, or is it a run the carp out of it hull?

Re: 1975 16ss New to me

Thanks for comments, floor and transom are solid and motor runs great. Gonna use to cruise/fish mainly the Ohio River between Downtown Louisville and upriver to 18 mile Island. Thought about a paint job but i think i like the bare aluminum? Want to do a pedestal drivers seat, so any advice on securing pedestal base to wood floor? Thanks Matt

It certainly looks like a well maintained boat. Polish the bare aluminum with some Sharkhyde and you will love it

Welcome to the Starmada! :welcome:

You've started off on the right foot by:
  1. Buying a starcraft:thumb:
  2. Starting a thread in iboats :thumb:
  3. Posting pictures! :thumb:

To add a little clarity to what Sig said, Sharkhyde has both a polish & a sealant...2 separate products / purposes.

If you want to shine-up that aluminum, you'd use the polish...kind of like jelly. It polishes as well as cleans-up the oxidation.

at a minimum, you'll want the sealant.

Yeah those back to back loungers have seen better days alright. It's a problem securing pedestal bases on existing floors, especially half inch ply underneath because sooner or later the screws will just pull right out.

One could fabricate up a base plate out of ply to give a larger area for the pedestal to hold onto. Say like a 1.5' square or a larger rectangle of 3/4" ply sealed up and painted nice. Secure it to the existing floor with good SS screws and PL premium. Then you would have some meat to sink in some screws that are buttered up with 5200.

another option would be to install a 6 or 8" round access port into deck on either side of stringers, so you could reach up under the seats and through-bolt em from below.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but I looked again at the initial post and it appears as though your splashwell is cracked. Follow the "Evinrude" decal and you'll see it where the angled-sheet meets the cross-member. This is a canary for a compromised transom. We see it more-often than not with this vintage of boat.

Has the transom been replaced?

regardless, crawl under the splashwell to make sure the knee-brace isn't cracked.

Re: 1975 16ss New to me

Thanks for suggestions and replys, i am going to do the polish/protectant and keep hull as is. BlueFin you have a good eye there is a crack in splashwell. The PO put some kind of sealant over it. I checked knee-brace and did not see any cracks but one side had bottom bolt missing. Here is transom pics:

Any suggestions, Thanks

It's a good thing that the knee-brace is still intact. The goop smeared all over that splashwell is a pretty good indication that it's time for some new wood back there. Have someone Grab the O/B and push/pull it while you watch to see if the transom flexes at all...even if the flex is barely measurable, it flexed enough to justify replacement.

Its time to change the transom. That wood shouldn't be that dark.

Re: 1975 16ss New to me

agree wtih both Sig and BF, cept i'd say no need for the flex test....the sillycome at gap with splashwell, coupled with the crack, tells me there has been movement. the former is so common as to almost be an indicator of a bad transom by itself.

Re: 1975 16ss New to me

Welcome to the Mob, Rem.

A further comment on the transom - If you are going to use her this summer, keep a close eye on the knee brace. If it shows any sign of cracks, replace the transom quick. It goes down hill fast. Transom R/R isn't a tough job if you decide to do do it before the season.

How are the floors? And your PO sure loved his sillycone:facepalm:

She's gonna look nice all polished up and shiny. :D

Re: 1975 16ss New to me

I would go ahead and change the transom before using it this summer its about a 4 hour job excluding dry time.

When you do it I suggest you use a grinder and cut the gunnells not bend them.

Re: 1975 16ss New to me

Thanks for all the insight everyone and i am gonna do the transom replacement. I guess i need to start building an outboard stand. I've read the Starcraft transom threads and it seems pretty straight forward but i'm sure i will get confused on things and will start a resto thread on it. As far as the floor goes it seems real solid (i know i said that about transom before, newbie) and seems to have been replaced in recent years but definitely gonna do transom.

One question, if there is a crack in knee brace what are options? Tig Weld? Will JB Weld work? Others?

Thanks Again
