Re: 1975 16ss New to me

Thanks for all the insight everyone and i am gonna do the transom replacement. I guess i need to start building an outboard stand. I've read the Starcraft transom threads and it seems pretty straight forward but i'm sure i will get confused on things and will start a resto thread on it. As far as the floor goes it seems real solid (i know i said that about transom before, newbie) and seems to have been replaced in recent years but definitely gonna do transom.

One question, if there is a crack in knee brace what are options? Tig Weld? Will JB Weld work? Others?

Thanks Again

Good plan! You have some company...I cut the wood for my transom yesterday :D

Tig Weld maybe, JB weld no-way.

Most of us (including myself), rivet 3" aluminum Angle to it.

Yep just rivet 3" aluminum angle to it.

Nothing to the outboard stand 2@ 2x6 3@2x4 and one pound of 3 inch exterior screws. Easily built in 2 hours for less than $30.00
They burn in a wood stove in about 30 minutes though.

Micheal P sells replacements on ebay for the corner caps, does a real nice job on them. The transom looks a little worse for wear.

Good progress! It will be like a whole new boat when you're done with it! :thumb:

There ya go! Hey take a look at the white spots on the wood. They will correspond with corrosion on the transom skin. Be sure to clean them well with a wire wheel and fill the pitting with MT or JB. I always prime the skin with SE and another coat of regular primer before putting the new transom wood back in.

Re: 1975 16ss New to me

Thanks for all the advice so far. The knee brace does have a crack. I would like to get the splashwell off for better access but between silicone and paint i'm not sure which/where rivets to drill out. Can someone please give specific details on splash removal. Thanks

There should be 4 rivets on each side going through the splash well up into the gunwales, then two on each of the four backets, two on the front corners and two on the back of the front top of the splash well, hope that helps.

Fire up that wire wheel and make the gunk fly, you'll find them rivets. :heh:
