Greetings:

I have a few questions. From previous advice I've gotten, it was assumed the I have a bad clutch dog. The motor tends to pop out of gear when under power in forward, and has now started to "skip"; it loses power for a split second. I was able deal with the problem for a short time by maintaining forward pressure on the shift lever, but the "skipping" problem has gotten worse.

1. Does this sound like the clutch dog?
2. I'm dying to keep using the motor through the weekend to hunt ducks. Is there a chance of completely trashing the entire gear assembly by continuing to use the motor in this condition?
3. Is there a less expensive place to get a replacement clutch dog than from the shop.evinrude.com website? They list the part @ $167. I'm assuming that buying a salvage part in this case would be a bad idea.

Thanks for our help.

If your clutch dog is jumping you can also look forward to replacing the forward gear. Your "skipping" prob sounds like ignition. Check your plugs first.

You might get by with a new dog but I would get it in asap, everytime that slips it is hurting the forward gear.

I had a '69 9.9 Rude that was doing the same thing and I snuck by with just getting a dog, so it is worth a try.

Google it, you should find a ton of places with that part for less, maybe Ebay too.

The "skipping" could be the dog slipping, it will work out adn rotate till it catches the next set of dogs so it loses power for just asecond.

A skipping motor is hard on the dog and gears as it's continually pounding in and out of power. Best not to run it much until you fix the skipping. Like Boobie says, start by checking the plugs first.

And if you 'have' to use it. Stay at slow speeds and speeds below where you know it will kick out. And yes, it sounds like a clutch dog to me also.

A bad clutch dog is more like hitting a log at speed, rather than skipping. Follow Boobie's advice.

Some people describe it as hitting a log, some describe it as a skip or miss, and some people say they hit a 'gator. It's all the same thing, it is coming out of gear, rotating 180 degrees, and slamming back into gear. Every time it does that, it is damaging the forward gear and shift linkage a bit more. You may have already trashed it.

EDIT: The original dog was part number 316501 and is superceded by new number 390030 dog and cradle assembly. I have one if you are interested. Send me a PM

THanks for your help. It does feel like the skeg is hitting something.

I think I found the part locally. As long as its not triple the price I'm going to try and pick it up tonight and replace it this evening.

Any common pitfalls in the replacement process? I read in posts elsewhere to remove the lower unit and then just open the clamshell at the bottom of the lower unit. It all should all be right there, huh?

One other dumb (maybe?) question. Is the part reversible? In other words, could I take the part out, put the worn side to the reverse gear that I use very little and only a little above idle, and get through the weekend until I can get the right part for a lower price (theres one on Ebay for $45)?

Please understand that I'm fairly manic, and thus completely illogical, when it comes to my duck hunting, especially when the season closes on Sunday.

Thanks guys.

There is a difference between "skipping" (Ignition miss) and "clunking" (Dog jumping). Just have to have the ear to pick them out.
