1975 25hp Evinrude - Stuck in reverse

Hubby is on the lake right now. The motor is stuck in reverse. He went from neutral to reverse then to forward and it is stuck in reverse.

I'm no expert, but maybe he can pull a little bit on the recoil(and pull on shift lever) and keep advancing the motor 1/4 turn at a time and maybe it'll slide in to gear

They made it back in. He checked the linkage by opening the oval on the side. It moved fine. Any ideas?

I changed the lower unit oil, shifting through the gears as it drained. Still stuck - lever moves but it never comes out of reverse. Any help would be most appreciated!

When you look through the oval, are you certain that the lower shift rod is moving up and down? If it is, then there is some sort of damage inside the lower unit---which would be very unusual unless it is suffering from serious neglect or abuse. Whatever the cause, you will have to go in and look.
