So I bought this old boat, 1975 StarCraft 16' Holiday. Main motor is a 50hp Evinrude of the same year.Guy just had the bottom end serviced with new water impeller.

It started hard the first time but I found a fuel leak. After fixing the leak I could not start it. Somewhere along the way of checking compression and plugs and spark the plug wires got switched, I guess.

Every picture I got, including a genuine 1975 Evinrude service manual shows the top coil feeding the top plug. Guy comes out, does what I did, switches wires and the thing fires. I feel stupid, not the first time. Yes the bottom coil feeds the top cylinder.

So somewhere along the line someone sets the timing 180 degrees off, right? I don't know if that's possible, I've tried to decipher the manual to see if possible. I'm thinking a timing light will prove this.
Should I fix it or live with it.

I've learned alot since I started reading this forum, the sticky is a wealth of info, I couldn't find this on a search.

Sounds wild so yes id get a timing light.
Then, Maybe move that bottom coil up. or if it works just let sleeping dogs lie

The powerpack wires were switched. The powerpack triggers the coils to fire and I bet there is a set of wires crossed there.

Someone may have changed the powerpack and when the inserted the wires into the plug housing they got them mixed up.

Sounds like the primary wires to the coils are switched. Swap them if they will reach, or just leave it alone, it's running.
