I have a 1975 Johnson 55 that I just received and am not sure how to tell if the water pump is working properly.
I know with newer engines there is a pee line on the top side of the foot that the water comes out of but a I don't see anything like that on this one.
I just hate to run it till I know the pump is working properly.

Thanks, Timmy

Re: 1975 55hp Johnson water pump question

I see two slots in the back of the motor just below the power head, should I be getting water out of them when the motor is running.
I checked everything else that I can think of and cleaned the carbs. It starts but I want to make sure the water pump is working before I run it for more than a few seconds.

you should be getting atleast a mist and drops out of those holes. you can add a tale tell, in the future. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=222677

hello,

the tell-tale looks like a positive item. its discharge per the link is under the lower engine cover in rear. this could be hard to see from topside. is a side position for the discharge port also suitable.

in the link it was hard to read the suggested nps pipe thread size. is it 1/8th?

will any nipple suitable for a 3/16ths hose be ok for engine side?
