I recently bought another boat.

I am confused as to where water shoots out of this engine. I hooked up the earmuffs - started the engine - and it seems to leak out of every spot I can imagine

I am used to having an engine where there is one line... with a steady stream of water rifling out of it signaling the water pump is working. I can not find a line on this engine like I normally would be able to on other engines I have owned.

please any info would be greatly appreciated.

also - what would be the best manual to buy for this engine - an owners manual, a parts catalog or a service manual?

Thank you

Others will know more than me, but I think if you want a tell tale, I think you must add one. Buy a OEM service manual specific for your model. Maybe EBAY?

Motors back then did not have a tell tale on them.--They did not put them on because they were considered " not needed " in the day.---Now most folks want one and seem to think that when the motor starts and pumps water then everything is OK.-------Have seen many motors that have tell tales destroyed due to lack of maintenance of the pump.-----Just install a new impeller every 3 years and enjoy boating.

its not leaking in the powerhead - mostly the lower unit has water coming out of what seems like alot of areas..

and I was told by the owner that he had put a new impeller on when I bought it. But i do not trust anyone. Plus it would be nice to know where water is supposed to exit when/if I do pull off the lower unit to instal a new impeller.

Thank you for the links - so the stream of water that I am used to seeing is called a tell tale or tale tell? Ive replaced 3 impellers before (different engines) and seeing that stream on my motors is a relief. I read somewhere that my model does not have a "tell tale" and that water "seeps" from many places in the lower unit. That does not seem right to me but I am a novice.. I was hoping to get advice on here before taking a half a day to just go ahead and replace the impeller or taking it to a marina to hopefully get some facts about this new motor of mine

thanks again

I think the 70hp evinrude manual would be ok. I have some old manuals and the only reference to johnson or evinrude is on the cover page. They also can be bought new from outboardbooks.com

Fact, I have seen many newer motors that have a tell tale destroyed by overheating.---------The tell tale gives folks a false sense of security.--------Yes water leaks out of many places when an outboard runs on a hose and is VERY normal.--------In my opinion that motor is 40 years old and it has survived without a tell tale.

A mist of water should blow out the exhaust relief holes on the backside, part way down. That is your tell tale---as such.
Don't be kidding yourself---there is no way to tell if a water pump is working if you are running it on muffs. Hose pressure will force water through the system even if the pump is garbage.

That's the thing. I tried with a garbage can and couldn't tell if it was working. Same thing when I went to the muffs. Best bet is just to take out the lower unit and shaft etc and replace the pump. I don't want to worry about it. Just be nice to know if what I did was working or not. Thanks again.

Oh and I have no plans on installing a tell tale. Cool info to know though that some engines actually done have them. I never knew
