1975 85 hp johnson, no spark

put it away two years ago ran fine,, try to get it running now and no spark to the plugs,, motor turns over and electric choke works,, where should I see if there is power, or what could of went bad? thanks for any help.... :confused:

Is the clip in your safety kill switch? Is your conttrol in Neutral? Either of these can prevent spark.<br /><br />Failing that, get a manual and do a routine ignition check out.<br /><br />Good luck. :)

JB has good advice -- good chance it's just your starting procedure after a couple of years of not running the motor. Are you sure there is no spark? I had a '70 85hp until recently, and it just took a while before it would fire up after sitting -- but always finally started and ran well.

RedWolf.... Remove the spark plugs, rig a spark tester whereas you can set 1 gap to 7/16", then check the spark. If no spark, remove the black/yellow wire from the power pack and recheck. If you now have spark, either the ignition switch is shorted or was in the off position, or a short exists in the wiring harness.<br /><br />Note.... After sitting for that length of time, the carburetors are no doubt fouled and will require removing, cleaning, and rebuilding.

thanks for the help,, have a manual on the way, I will try that yellow wire that you mentioned joe,, I have already put at tester on the spark plug wires and they are not firing,, i will try the yellow wire though and let you know joe,, if I can get out of work before late tomorrow night,,, thanks again for all the help.... :) ;)
