1975 850 tach question

Hi, I just got a universal 12 pole tach from a reputable seller on ebay and im having trouble. i have the wire correct , but it pegs to 8000 when hit the key. I tried wiring it direct and same thing. on the back of tach there is no dials or anything. This is what i got

Any ideas on what is wrong?

Check you have the power, ground and signal wires on the right terminals... If you remove the signal wire and just have the power and ground on, then it should sit on '0'... If it doesn't, send it back for replacement or refund....

thx, i tried that and still does it..also only does it when ground is connected.
