to all the johnson gurus. I have a 1975 85hp johnson motor in which the stator wires have burned up. Everywhere I look for that year model there is a choice between a 6amp or a 12amp stator. Tell me what to check or how to figue out which one is on my motor. thanks for all the help.

I think thats just the charging circuit amperage. Like the amperage of your car's alternator. I would get the bigger one (I always get the bigger stuff however).

- Vegard

My 73 135hp has a 6amp alt. THe reason for that is that the unit charges all the time, it's unregulated. The 12's I think are regulated and what come on the later models. I cant answer completely and for sure, but I think I determined what one was on mine from the components and a schematic from Clymers manual. My alternator output went directly to a rectifier, and from there to battery. Regulated will be set up differently. A little fuzzy, but I hope that helps.
