Hello iBoaters,

Well I have my boat out on the water and am enjoying the summer. So far the engine runs great...it starts right up with minimul choke and pulls a tube or a skier with ease.

I have only one issue and I was wondering if anyone else had this problem. Sometimes (not always) after we have been running for a while and then shutoff, the engine is hard to re-start. It acts like it is flooded. What could be causing this? I have ran through about 4 - 6 gallon tanks full of gas so I wouldn't think it would be the gas, it just has me puzzled.

Thanks,

These early crossflow carbs tended to leak a little fuel, esp if the engine was tilted up. The excess fuel/oil will drip/collect in the bottom of the airbox, where it will get sucked into the airbox drain hose when the engine is restarted. That lower cyl will get that excess fuel and it may make it hard starting and it may smoke excessively for 30 seconds till it burns off. You may find that carb overhauls (new floats and needle and seats) may help somewhat. Especially if these carbs may have been made at the factory with the old cork floats. Some of these old cork floats loose their coating and won't float in gas anymore.

Could be that todays' crappy gasoline has a higher volitility than these engines were engineered for and flashes to vapour or boils during the heatsoak that comes after shutdown. When you try to restart, over rich mixture. Most cars these days do not use carbs, but rather fuel infection and within the pressurized fuel lines the fuel stays liquid and don't have this issue. It could get worse as the temps rise
