I just changed the impeller and gear lube in my 79 90hp.
When i was running it in a can after a while the can was full of lube.
So when i looked it seems to be leaking out the bottom plug.
Can i get these plugs anywhere or are they special order like everything else on these motors?

Re: 1975 90hp gear lube plugs

The plug itself is a very short, standard 3/8 X16 thread, stainless pan head type screw. Mercury and OMC also used variations of them in various years. At least one year, OMC used a really nice one with an O Ring seal.

However, I suspect that you either lost or damaged the white or clear nylon washer seal that goes under the head. Again, Merc and OMC used them in different colors.

SO: Unless you are a purist needing the engine to be all original parts, take what you can get. ---A seal is a seal is a seal. Be sure to tighten the pee eye double ess out of it.

Are you sure it is lower unit oil? when you run these engines in a bucket, you get quite a bit of unburned gas and engine oil in the water quite quickly. Lower unit oil will smell peculiar--a sulpher type smell. However the odor may be covered by the gasoline.

I reused the old ones that where black gaskets. And pretty sure it was gear lube since it had a green tint to it like the new lube.
