Hey folks, I have been having problem after problem with this boat. Mechanic has replaced carb, cleaned it out, did the timing, replaced a coil and all spark plugs. Starts fine and seems that it will idle all day, however it kills every time I try and go anywhere, forward or backwards... Please help!

Another good thing to check out is the compression on all cylinders. If 2 or even 1 cylinder is more then I think it is 10 lbs below the others this could cause this issue as well. Also general low compression will usually idle just fine and only be noticeable when under load.

Is the lower unit locked up? Is it running on all 4 cyls? Spark good on all 4 plugs? That engine will seem to idle just fine, when running on 2 cyls on the trailer.

How can I check if lower unit is locked up? The boat mechanic said the other coils were firing alright and only replaced the one. All new spark plugs he put in as well. In the water it run in idle, but ya sputs and kills every time it's engaged.

Not an expert by any means, but i have been investigating a similar issue with my 25HP stalling when trying to accelerate, and the concesus sems to be that it is a fuel issue, is there enough fuel getting to you carb?

there are a bunch of threads refencing this.

Good luck.

What probly happened he adjusted with the muffs on it it will sound perfect like its the rightbut may need just a little more power you could just use your throttle to see if thats the problem some motor have like two throttle adjustments

Perhaps we should first address the manner which it is stalling? Is it stalling as soon as you put it into gear (like immediately) or does it die "slower" (maybe even run for a second or two, at least spark a few times) like it is running out of fuel?

Edit: Just re-read the original post, OP said that the mech adjusted timing, it would be pretty ridiculous to adjust the timing on muffs (Idle timing could be done, but probably not WOT timing) If a mechanic simply adjusted to factory spec, you might not be getting the idle advance you need to keep that old beast turning when you engage gear. It might be worth it to simply call your mechanic, if he adjusted the timing in a tank, he would've also had to get it into gear, correct?)

Yeah your right if it stalls as soon as putting in gear could be throttle but if stays running after putting in gear but when you hit throttle it will be another issue evsta thats a good idea bfmiller let us know
