I replaced the impeller and housing season before last, which worked great until now. I just pulled lower unit off and the impeller appears as good as new. Impeller key was also good. Sucked water out the exhaust with a vacuum cleaner. Blew air through holes. Installed a tell-tale, which also worked all last season. I did not see a thermostat on this motor int he diagram. I put thermocoupler on it and let it idle to 200f then shut it off. Gear box is turning water fine in forward and revers. Running in a garbage can. Any ideas?

That motor actually is a very old design, and a multitude have been built and are still giving good service. So it has to be something simple as racer suggested.

racer was correct. Filled can to very top and it was fine. Did this several times in the can before and never really noticed how full I was filling it. It is an excellent old motor. Hope my next is as good.

I have a 1976 40hp evinrude that I have got running very well with some help from here.. And just learning by working on it. People ask me why do you not buy a nice new four stroke? Then when they see all my fishing gear they ask where did you get the money for that.

Going on 2 decades with this same boat and motor now....just time to upgrade. Motor has never left me on the lake. If I never sell it then I will always have a good boat and motor. I did put it up for sale locally and I hate to let it go after owning it for soooo long now, but we need something bigger. Just want to make sure everything is working good before I actually sell it to someone.

HF it is crazy how much these motors cost new! I would never buy one new. Would just buy an old Evinrude/Johnson.

I can't seem to get a good grasp on used boat prices. Is nada a decent place to get accurate values on used boats? It doesn't appear to be uncommon for people to ask twice NADA book value, so I am wondering if that is a decent place to get fair market value.
