I have a 1975 Evinrude 2 stroke.... 50 HP, what mixture oil is recomended, and what brand of 2 stroke do you recomend? and, where should water be coming out of? I have heard its only saposed to come out with the exhaust at the Prop... is that true? or should water be coming out above that out of a hose? or hole? or something? or just the prop? thanks!

you have a through hub exhaust which means thats where the exhaust exits, the water should come out of a tell tale on the lower cowling or maybe from a port part way down the back of the lower leg.50:1 oil mixture and any tcw-3 rated 2 stoke oil will do by rights.hopefully somebody else chimes in about the water exit as im not 100 percent positive which one i described is correct for your motor.i think if you put your hand just below the bottom of the cowling where there is a couple of ports you should feel water mist ,i was looking at some vids on youtube and i only seen one 1975 with what looks like a home made telltale.

Run 50:1 in that, any oil that says "2 Stroke outboard oil" and has a TCW3 rating is fine, I actually get mine at Speedway, Wal Mart is fine too.

As long as it is rated TCW3 you are fine but stay away from weed whacker and chain saw oil, they run much hotter and have a different formulation.

I normally put in 3oz per gallon then alittle extra for the heck of it, plugs are cheap.

My buddy has a 75-76 and doesn't have a tell tale, they can be added but I don't think they came from th factory that way.

I am pretty sure Cougar is right, the 2 vertical vents under the cowl are the exhaust relief vents and you will egt water out of htem but if you are running it on muffs it seems like water comes from everywhere which is normal.

Is there a specific problem that makes you ask that?

well, running muffs yes. water comes out everywhere, im just gona replace my impeller just for the heck of it, water shoots out of the exhaust area, out of the prop, just makin sure its normal and wasnt saposed to shoot out anywhre else, and yes, i watched the vids on youtube as well with the telltale, yea mine is not that way for sure, must only come out at the prop

if it only can out at the prop how would you tell if its working in the water?hence the need for a telltale or the misting from the ports i mentioned.i have at least 6 or 7 motors and they either have a telltale or port exhaust, it might be that its not very noticable on muffs thats all .if your unsure of the history of the impeller your correct in replacing, cheaper than a motor.dont do what some of those characters did in the vids and rev the motor when its not in the water or you could risk a runaway and total boom boom.you might get away with it a bunch of times but that one runaway is going to be messy.

There should be a pee hole in the drip pan and maybe two holes beneath it on the downhousing where you can see water exiting when the pump's good. Use 50:1 at less than 6000 RPM, double up for 6000 RPM and higher. And don't buy cheap oil, stick to Evinrude, Yamaha, Mercury TCW-3. That's the advice of the engineer who built the motors at OMC until 2000. But I would add: Castrol TCW-3 is also good. With other TCW-3 oils you may later discover unpleasant carbon deposit problems clogging the exhaust ports. If you run wide open and at higher RPM you can also use Evinrude E-Tec XD-100 synthetic, but I wouldn't recommend it at low RPM: it's low ash, not ashless, and needs high combustion chamber temperature to get ride of the ash. A friend runs that stuff 50:1 in a V-6 looper at 9000 RPM.

DP, the best thing you can do is buy a water pressure gauge and install it. I have been told not to trust a water temp sensor and there are models out there that don't have tell tail streams or they are very weak, which could be normal. I think water pressure is around 7psi, but don't trust me on that, check with a mechanic. It is also suggested that you buy an infared thermometer, which you can just point at the engine block/heads and get a more accurate reading. Checking this type of problem with ears is next to impossible due to the pressure of the water hose and the water does not heat up (thermostats). You HAVE to use a tank of some sorts or put her in the water. Hope that helps a little, best my little brain can do. Good Luck. Dale

well, i started it up for awhile, and it did have a stream coming from the motor, only when it was running... the water did get warmer then the water going in to it, wasnt a very strong stream of water, but it was there,
