1975 Evinrude 9.9 Slow Idle Question

I have searched the forums already and not sure of the answer. I picked this motor up , the slow idle knob and adjustment bar were missing. The previous owner rigged up some spring and wire contraption to keep it at idle. This is great and all but I don't like jerry rigging when the parts can be bought to make it work again.

So I picked up the parts but I'm left scratching my head. The new bar is plastic, can't see this lasting long. From what I can tell the idea is for this bar to travel to push on a rod that control's the ignition advance so the tiller doesn't need to be touched. Is this correct?

When not in use, is the knob supposed to be adjusted back out? It seems like when i put it in the hole (without the lock ring, just as a test) it acts as a throttle stop more than an adjustment. When I turn the tiller handle it tries to push the bar out of the hole, making me think that normal operation would involve backing the adjustment bar out all the way. Does this make sense to anybody in boat land?

I'm including a pic to anyone who can say "just stick it in the hole , looks good to me" LOL

Well done. The parts you picked up are for slow speed adjustment. I use it all the time and love the feature. Here is my rendition of how it works. Normally you move your tiller throttle back and you get to the minimum idle speed your boat will run in gear. The MPH will vary depending on a number of factors including boat size and weight, wind, current, etc. Now say your out on a lake and want to troll at 2.2 MPH. What you do is bring your throttle back and then crank your speed adjustment knob until your trolling at 2.2 MPH. You can leave the adjustment where it's at and move around all day at various speeds and when you bring the throttle back to home you will be going 2.2 MPH. rather than hunting for the right setting all the time. Various factors will affect your speed of course but you will be close the the speed you want. The plastic bar will last a life time ( I think). It is a form of cruise control but for low speeds. Your motor will be going slow enough that you can safely shift in and out of gears with out worrying about damage to the clutch dog etc. Hope this is clear to you. Grease it up and stick it in the hole! You will notice it is a left hand thread. Rick.

Thanks for the reply Rick. The the question remains, do I back the bar out when I want to move at WOT? It seems that when I rotate the handle the bar stops the rotation, this makes perfect sense. In order to open it up the screw needs to be rotated in?

I'm not clear on what your asking. The idle adjustment screw (bar) only is in contact when the throttle is set to the slow running position. It should have no affect on WOT. You can retract it if you wish but I never do. Hope this helps. Rick.

Re: 1975 Evinrude 9.9 Slow Idle Question

Forget it , I figured it out, it stays in as far as the setting you want to idle at. Once in gear the bar rotates away from the slow idle bar, it was in neutral which won't allow for much movement in throttle.

I did notice however that it is hard to turn, I guess it has to be in order for it to stay in one position.

Re: 1975 Evinrude 9.9 Slow Idle Question

Glad to hear you got it working. It should turn reasonably easy. (try to interpret that) I had one that was difficult to turn and it puts all the pressure on the snap ring that holds the knob on the cowling. The snap ring would pop off due to the pressure and eventually wrecked the the channel cut into the knob. I had to pull all the throttle linkage up to the magneto and clean and re-lube it all and everything worked good after that. That idle adjustment is a dream come true for trolling. Rick.

Ya it should, provided you install it right. I am quite mechanically talented but outboards are a whole different beast.

The tab must be upward for it to work right, the original metal bar doesn't have the stop on the bar, I found a pic online that showed it installed correctly, that's why it was a SOB to turn, works much better now.

Here is a pic of it installed in case anyone else has a problem

I hope the $38 I paid for the parts is worth it and it works the way it was designed!
