If you can hear the choke, you should also be able to hear the starter solenoid. If it isn't clicking when you hit start, I would start by checking the voltage to it. The positive line of the battery connects on one side and the other side continues to the starter. There will be two terminals on the front that power teh coil (or one if it uses the battery ground). Make sure you are getting voltage there when you turn the key to start. If you don't, trace it back. Which engine do you have, I probably have a wiring diagram.
