ziggy , its not thru hull exhaust, that piece of pipe goes in elbow, its pressed in pretty hard, wasn't easy to remove, it kinda blocks raw water as it goes out of elbow as it goes down exhaust tube boot

once again. more speculation....
someone used a 3'' to 3'' rubber bellows between the riser and the exhust tube. i'm pretty sure mines 4'' reduced to 3'' into the exhust pipe... i don't think that's the way it's supposed to be... ya gotta service manual (like in oem, not seloc or whatever).... nothing like that in what i've read of it....

yeah its a 4'' to 3'' rubber boot, its just when i took elbow off i didn't expect to find this piece of pipe, big ken he has seen it in fresh water kit, and this boat has antifreeze in block and raw water pump mounted on motor,i don't even know if stern drive water pump is there till i disassemble, just trying to figure what i got under the engine cover and decide the best way to make it dependable- i have already downloaded that manual ,also checked repacement ads for elbow and they mention nothing about this insert pipe-ziggy the rubber boot goes right cast iron part of elbow, pipe acts like a curtain forceing water down instead of across to other side of elbow

so you have a heat exchanger, mounted below the exhust manifold? port side even...
fresh water cooled? ya'll still have an impeller in the drive and circulation pump on the front of the engine.
i thought the difference in risers was the gasket that was used between the riser and the manifold on raw water vs. fresh water cooled.... ??????????

someone must be more hip to the facts.....

heat exchanger sits same side as sparkplugs and sits high on engine about valve cover height, seawater pump mounted above alternator, circulation pump on block, haven't checked to see if impeller is in stern drive yet, that was the whole reason for question about pipe in elbow i'm not sure what is right or wrong

I don't know, i thought i seen every way there was to jury rig a boat.

Ayuh,....

The Bottom line is,.....

That riser is JUNK....

The 1s I have kicking around, that piece of tubing is Cast Iron,+ apart of the Casting, aka, Not removable...

There have been Many manufacturers of those things,+ they All did it slightly differently....
That tube was, no doubt, at 1 time Pressed into the casting to form 1 piece....
It's now JUNK...
Get a New riser, or even a complete New Manifold,+ riser.....
If the manifold looks as Bad as the Riser,.... You need the Whole Thing...

so a new riser will have tube in it? and yeah manifold is junk 2, ijust want to make sure i install correct parts- tube or no tube?

when i got one a couple years ago. i don't believe it had any tube in it. it did come with 2 different manifold to riser gaskets though. one that looked just like mine. and the other with some passages bloced off. i believed that one was for a closed system. i did get after market. ya can always go to the merc parts store. ordering by serial number will usually get you the correct parts... $$$$
