1975 Johnson 135 v4 ( no reverse ) HELP

I replaced the water pump and took her out for the test shes running great but know no reverse. At first the shifter would go into reverse but it went forward slow instead of backward. Know it wont even go into reverse. It stops at neutral. Help please i am going on vacation the 19th and would like to have it working.

Sounds like the shift linkage didn't end up the way it started. I assume it worked fine prior to the change out of the pump. Did you double check the linkage beneath the carbs? Do you have a good OEM manual to work with?

Yes everything worked fine before but i think the linkage in the lower unit didnt line up correctly. just trying to find alittle help before i take it back apart. yes i have a manual but it sucks.

The only adjustment of your shift rod is the barrel swivel at the top of the shift rod. It needed to be turned down (clockwise) all the way and then no more than two turns out (counterclockwise) to get it to face forward.

Once you have the bellcrank reconnected the way it was, there is nothing else to adjust at the engine except the cable.

Unless you adjusted the cable trunion, the cable should have just snapped back into place.

If the cable has slipped inside the casing guide at the engine, you should be able to see it by watching it as someone else moves the arm at the helm.
