I have searched for information online about a kill switch and how it works to no avail. Can you guy's tell me what the function is and how it works on this motor/what triggers the kill switch?

Just going through the wiring diagram and I don't see one on that year motor. Are you wanting to install one or are did someone do it and you are troubleshooting???

Your motor has (basically) a magneto type ignition. When you shut it off with the key you complete a circuit to ground which kills the spark. When you pull the lanyard on the kill switch you complete that ground circuit, which kills the spark and shuts the motor off even though the key is still on.

The idea is that the operator has the lanyard attached when the engine is running. That way if, for any reason, the operator (driver) is away from the controls the motor shuts down.

Thanks BK I did not think This motor had a kill switch but people keep asking in the posts about no spark and checking the kill switch, I have no spark and am trying to track it down using a generic manual. (won't make that mistake again) even read in a post to remove the Black/yellow from the power pak to bypass the kill switch ( on this motor) I had a boat in the past that had a KS but this one didn't seem to. Thanks

Re: 1975 johnson 50hp kill switch

here are some test: http://www.boatpartstore.com/page29.asp if you just unplug the main harness big red plug, that takes the controls out of the equation.

Jump Starting outboard
#1 you need a really sturdy mount. lots of torque there. you connect battery cables ground to block, postive to top post on solenoid. mount the muffs on water intake, connect hose. now with a remote starter switch, auto parts store, connect 1 wire of the switch to the top battery post on the solenoid, the other wire to the top small post, turn water on, squeeze switch, motor should turn over. CAUTION: there are only three ways to stop the motor, disconnect fuel line, choke the motor, or remove all plug wires. DO NOT rev the motor higher than 1500 rpms. it can cause a run away motor that cannot be stopped, other than disconnecting fuel source, but in the mean time, may throw a rod, etc.

Your motor according to the diagram has the pulse type system, the type before power packs were used.

Check the tests that Tashasdaddy posted.
