1975 Johnson 6 Electrical problem? Video

Hi all - I've got this great little 6 horse that I recently got running again but I've got a new problem. It runs great for about 15-20 minutes but then it starts to "load up" and sputter real bad and gets worse as time goes on. This really only happens while in gear and the motor is under a load. I've replaced the plugs, taken apart the carb and given it a a rebuild with no change in performance. I also got the original factory manual and have been reading through thinking it might be something under the flywheel (points or coils?) Trouble is that I'm not sure what special tools I would need to remove the flywheel and any other parts to change these out.

Should I "fabricate" a special tool for this or am I getting in over my head? Also, does this sound like a reasonable problem that would cauise this sputtering? I've confirmed it isn't a fuel problem.

Lastly, I did remove the entire block at one point and replaced it without changing the gasket as it looked in good condition, could this be the problem?

when you did the carb, did you remove and clean the high speed jet? it is deep behind the bowl drain screw? you need special tool 317002. to remove the jet.

No I did not actually remove the high speed jet. I was able to hold it at the right angle to the light and see through it and it was completely clear and perfectly "round". I replaced most of the parts that came with the rebuild kit but to be honest the carb looked like new. I'm by no means a professional mechanic so maybe looking new and working like new are two completely different things? Should I take it off again and get the tool? If so where would I get one of those? I'll go surf the web now and see what I can find.

I believe you have a coil that is failing at higher heat levels.This is common on older engines that have the coils under the flywheel.You can purchase new ignition parts thru IBOATS(your info was free)change the points and condensors too while you have the flywheel off,you need a flywheey puller that uses 3 bolts threaded into the tappings on top of flywheel,a jaw type puller may break the flywheel,

Before you pull the flywheel, try running the motor with the cover removed. It's better to run it on the water and not in a test barrel for this part. If the exhaust gasket is leaking, the fumes under the hood can choke the intake. It's a good idea to check the magneto parts under the flywheel in any case.

Thanks for the info. That sounds like what I was thinking. Just good to hear some people that know these little motors say it! I'll be looking for a flywheel puller today, is that something that autozone might have to "borrow"?

Also, what all do I need to buy to replace? Coils and points but is there anything else while I have the flywheel off?
