Hello
I have had this 1975 Johnson 6 Horsepower engine on my John Boat for about Five years now. It has never missed a beat all the time I have owned it and run out perfectly. Last week we launched it and it did not want to stay running. it would start right up when choked and seemed to run fine until it wormed up a bit then, it would die. I felt perhaps the gas may have some water in it so I dumped the gas and added fresh gas to it which made no difference, it would start right up when choked then die if I tried to pull off the choke. We Loaded it and went home.
Yesterday I got back into seeing if I could find the problem with it. it started up fine cold and ran good for about Three to four minutes even taking off the choke, then it would die. When I would get it running and it started to die, even if I gave it a shot of either it would still die. That led me to think it may be ignition parts so I Pulled the fly wheel and replaced the two set's of points and condensers. I made certain I had them gaped at . 020" and put it all back together. it did not change a thing it still started right up choked then died after about 15 seconds. I then took off the fuel pump and took it apart. The diaphragms all looked fine and there was not much junk in it, so I put it all back together being careful to get all the springs and gaskets back the way I found them.
I then removed the fuel line going to the Carb. and pulled the engine over. it squirted a good bit of gas out of it's fuel pump. I bought a Carb. rebuild kit and took the carb. apart. I did not see any garbage inside the Carb, but used a can of Gumout to blow through all the air Passages and they all seemed clear. I set the new float level and put it back together and bolted it back on the engine.
I cranked it up choking it, and it did not change a thing as it still run's for about Ten seconds then dies before it gets warm or I can take the choke off. It seems to have good strong compression and the spark is bright blue Is there a chance it may be the Crankshaft seal ? I appreciate any help I can get here, it is very frustrating at this point. Best regards, General Stuart
