Hello all, my engine is acting up only at wot. It runs almost flawless at other throttle positions only missed a few times during 4 hours, but any time i put it at wot it would miss constant. It jumps out of the hole but once it reaches top rpm it starts to miss like it is getting air in the gas or something. It doesn't bog down or anything just misses. It runs smooth at just below wot, but when I bump the throttle up just a little it will start missing. The boat usually ran about 31 32 mph at wot with no miss. Now it runs about 29 30 with a miss. It runs 27 to 28 smooth without missing???? I'm . I just cleaned carbs. They have Fixed jets. All fuel lines have been replaced.

Sounds like you have a high speed ignition miss. Your spark should jump a 7/16 " open air gap on a spark tester.

If it is how do you troubleshoot and fix it?

You might have a coil going bad. My '77 75hp Evinrude had a "miss" also...ended up being a bad coil. I changed all 3 of them....no probs since.

Re: 1975 Johnson 70 strange wot issue?

I pulled the plugs cylinder 1 has a black plug cylinder 2 and 3 plugs look great. I don't have a compression tester so, I put my thumb over the holes and turned the engine by hand. Cylinder 2 and 3 would push my thumb back but cylinder 1 was weak. Could this be a compression issue?
