1975 Johnson 85ESL75E 85hp Outboard Motor

I have been having a problem with hard starting and rough idle. I have been through a lot of the motor and it runs well. I recently discovered that the throttle guide casing at the motor is not returning all the way and that is inhibiting the choke plates and is probably the source of the hard starting. When I disengage the linkage the plates close all the way and she fires up strong.

While trouble shooting I discovered that the throttle casing is not returning but I can pull it all the way back to idle with my hand and work it up to full throttle. The warm up lever does not move the linkage at all.

When I manually move the level on the remote controls it will engage the throttle by opening but when I bring it back to neutral the throttle guide casing rests short of the normal low idle position.

I have cleaned and lubricated the guide casing and cable but that it all I have done.

Where should I start?

From the pictures you can see the idle screw is not resting at the stop. When I bring it back using the hand lever at the controls it just stops at this location. Again, I can manually bring it back by pulling on the casing or working the linkage.

I read the post by Joe Reeves. I will try that this morning. I will also try cleaning all the parts and see what I get. If anyone has any other thoughts on this topic it would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I think this is a problem with the cable. I am getting no throttle action on the motor when I work the hand lever at the controls or the warm up lever for that matter. The bolts/screws have been sheared off at the controls so I can't get the connections. Guess I am going to have to figure that one out - maybe a tap and die set. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

So I inspected part of the controls. The warm up lever and throttle/shift level move the cam and the arm. The cable travels at the control. At the motor - the throttle and shift cable move in forward and advance the throttle. However - when I come back to neutral with the handle lever at the controls the throttle stills sets higher and the idle screw is about a 1/2 inch from the rest stop. The gears go in neutral-reverse-forward just fine. It appears the throttle cable or linkage won't return to normal idle.

What to do at this point?

I don't think the throttle cable is disconnected because it advances the throttle just fine.

Do I need to shorten of adjust it so it comes back?
