Greetings and salutations to all. I have an all original 1975 johnson 85 on a 16 pontoon (85ESL75 E). I bought it this spring, drove it around the lake with amazing ease and ran flawlessly. I had to do some minor controller repair to the original Johnson command center controller (new ignition switch)...... didnt run it for a couple of months, and now i have issues. It takes a lot of travel to get into forward gear and once there it leaves no room for throttle and slows at the top of the throttle. Also it runs roughly. I have replaced the plugs and all are firing. I hope i am posting in the correct forum. Any input will be greatly appreciated.

Maybe the gear selector “holder” (wrong term I’m sure - holder nut thing) isn’t in its pocket.

Open it it up and make sure that the little black thing is in the slot towards the rear of the control box. It gets sandwiched by both sides to hold it in place.
