1975 JOHNSON 85hp (85ESL75) Sacrificial Zinc Anode

I have only recently purchased this motor and i cant see a zinc anode anywhere on it, or where one may have been in the past.<br /><br />1. Does this motor require a sacrificial zinc anode and if so, where should it go?<br /><br />2. There is small fin that is mounted above but sits behind the prop, i figure it is an offset for steering/stability underway. At the front of this small fin there appears to be a small cut-out section; what is this small cut-out section for?

All engines should have some form of anode. You can adjust this to take the torque out of the steering while under way. The section you refer to is where a thru bolt goes to help hold the lower unit to the midsection.

Are you talking about that small hole in the tab itself? If so, it picks up water which is forced thru a passage into the exhaust just as it exits the lower unit. The theory is that the added water helps cool the exhaust to protect the rubber hub in the prop.

Yes, i was talking about that little cut-out section and vertical hole in the trim tab for water injection, thanks that makes some sence of that. OK, im assuming my trim tab is not made of zinc because the ones on the website dont have that little water inlet; therefore, mine is not a sacrifcical anode.

Thats correct. They were not an anode (on the OMC's) like on the Merc's.
