1975 OMC Stern Drive - Need new Tilt Motor and Prop.

I recently purchased a 1975 Chris Craft Lancer that has the original Crusader Engine (1975 - 235 h/p) and the original OMC stern drive.
I have read the sticky on asking questions... So, at this risk of being scolded by the moderator and vice admiral, I don't have the serial number, because the boat is in storage until I pick it up this coming labor day weekend.
However, I do have some pictures (which are attached) of the outdrive and prop that a friend emailed to me. At this point, I know for sure that the tilt motor is getting power, but it is stuck. I will trouble-shoot once I get it, but in case I need to get a new one, I want to be sure I purchase the correct one. Also, it looks like the prop is chewed up pretty good and I will want to replace that as well.

So, I have two questions:

(a) Can someone please advise me on correct model/description for the the tilt motor (I know I can buy one online, ebay, etc...), I just want to make sure I get the right one.
(b) Can someone please direct me on the correct specs for a new prop (I know this can vary depending on what performance you want, but I will probably go with the specs as close to the original as possible, unless someone directs me otherwise). Specs may be the wrong time, but what I mean by that is correct size and pitch for the recommended open throttle rpms on this engine (if anyone knows this off hand).

Thanks kindly for your help and advice. I am new to iboats, and know very little, but am eager to learn.

Sincerely,
Patrick

For the tilt issue, try pulling the clutch cover and removing the clutch pack and see if it will turn. If it still won't turn, it could be that the motor is corroded internally which is common if the bilge has had water sitting in it. The motors are pretty simple, and I removed and rebuilt mine myself. If you're not comfortable doing it yourself, any motor place should be able to do it for about 1/2 the price of a new one. If you still want a new one, the OMC part# is 382138.

For the prop, I have added a post to my thread on Stringer info on prop selections.

Might also make sure you've got a fully charged battery, clean connections and good solenoids - they can stymie you too.

I had my prop rebuilt for $40... Way cheaper than a new one. yours does not look all that bad. so you should have no problem having it rebuilt.

as for the tilt motor Redeck is right. Mine was so corroded I had to replace it. about $200, kind of hurts on a $500 boat. but well worth it in the long run

Thanks for the information. It was very helpful, especially the thread on stringer info. Appreciate you taking the time to share the info. Plan to do some work to the boat over fall and winter so I am sure I will spending a good bit of time on this forum.

That's a good price on that motor. Double check it, 'cause they normally go for 4x that amount. If it starts getting wierd buying it - look into having yours rebuilt at a parts shop. I had mine done this past year for about $45. That should be the right motor.

You may or may not need anything else. The assembly has quite a few pieces that like to fall out on you when you're taking it apart, so pay close attention. The motor shaft meets a hammer coupling that is in two pieces held together by a spring. That coupling can be cleaned and put back in - if you find it's broken or missing, then you'll have to track another one down - ebay and patience. The hammer coupling on mine falls out the minute you take the motor off, so again watch for it - especially if you have a deep bilge. After the hammer coupling is the shaft for the worm gear. Hopefully that's okay. If the shaft is in good shape, I wouldn't try to take that out - I'd reassemble and see if everything works.

You can find parts and breakouts here: http://shop2.evinrude.com/Index.aspx?s1=8fkah3i4is33piho5vufj2ovh4&catalog_id=0&siteid=1

Good luck.

Hey Guys: Let me be clear that this is not a prohibited "for sale" ad outside of the classifieds. However, I am just trying to get a gauge of what my 1975 302 with OMC stringer outdrive is worth. Its working but some people who have listened to it told me it sounds like it might have a "valve rap" or rattle. If I do ever sell it, I just want to know a fair price range to ask (understanding that markets can differ). I did just get a brand new tilt motor by the way for $60.00 on ebay (see link above)- it came in 3 days and was just as advertised. So buy from that ebay link I posted above if you ever need one.
