I have a 85hp evinrude that runs great on muff but in water it dies while going in to gear forward or reverse. dont know timing or have book saving for one but just spent all my money on this boat.

I took it out to day and it fouled plug fast I cant remember the plug model it like ll77c4 or something of couse I had no luck finding it and had to get a cross matched plug but they were autolight or something supposed to be a replacement for original. I have to have a buddy work throllte at motor to make it in gear with out dying I alsonotice that when going into gear it boggs bad.

got great spark on the old plugs which i cleaned and reinstalled also compression is at least 109 per cylinder I think its 110 on the top 2 and 109 on bottom 2

cleaned carbs and fuel filter I also am using new gas line and built in tank, When we get it in gear and going it ok but wondering what type on settings I can try to fix this problem I also notice rpms seemed low when trying to open up motor and afer awhile there is a huge boost of power but takes awhile.
any info to help would be great.

boat 17' caprice by mfg and a 85hp evinrude 4 cyl
the years are either 75 or 76

read the TOP SECRET FILE, carb cleaning. you also have an idle speed stop screw, that you can adjust to set your low idle speed. the motor will run well on muffs, because there is not any back pressure on the exhaust, you can set your idle speed higher on muffs, and then you have to fine tune it in the water and in gear. 600-750 in water in gear.

the proper plug is CHAMPION Ql77JC4 gapped at .030. others brands are known to cause problems. NAPA auto parts carries Champion plugs, call them and they can get them for you.

Thanks I just got 11 of them plugs at the local walmart on clearence for .75 each I bought all they had lol.

Well we got it back in the water yesterday and here how it went.

We got it fired no problem but when going to get in gear died, so we manualy warmed it up and once it was doing better we were able to grab and go no problems even restart and take off after fishing a hole or two. We did notice there are 2 wires to the ele choke and only one is hooked up I think its the purple with yellow that loose. I'm wondering if there are some contact or something to clean mabye a low idle ignition issue?

well I am back to searching for answers later and thanks again
