No it won't Bob. In 1979, they changed the input shaft. One was a 4 spline, the other was different. I have 2 79's on rental boats and an 83' and a 88'. From 79 through 91, their all interchangable....I've got 2 parts-motors and I've had to be careful on the 79's because they were the first year of a newer design. But for the sake of the conversation....I've been told NO by several reliable sources about the pre-79 parts converting to the 79 and later motors. Especially lower units......renters like to tear them up on the rock beds in the river
