Hey guys I have been asking some questions about this motor because I can get one for $400.00 with lots of spare parts including several other lower units for it. The guy said it was a 135, I think, but he changed the exhaust to make it a 115? How can you tell a 115 from a 90 horse?

He also said the motor was rebuilt but I guess there is no way to know for sure. The motor looks great except for the steering arm which seems to be a problem on these motors in salt water.

I have a 1990 90 horse with no powerhead. The 1976 115 I am looking at is not a tilt and trim motor. My 90 horse is. Is there a way I can use the tilt and trim off the 90 on it somehow? Maybe put the 115 powerhead on the 90 setup with tilt and trim.

Are parts still available for the 1976 115?

The tilt trim off of your 90 will not fit the 115. You can look at the BRP site to compare parts, but in 1976 it will be an 85, 115, or 135 with the main difference being in the carbs and exhaust. The 115 powerhead will not bolt up to your 90 either, maybe someone knows how to modify one, but it is not as simple as swapping heads.

If it is a good running motor with lost of spare parts you might be alright, but you are getting close to what it worth in good running condition for the $400.00

The 135 had a bubbleback exhaust cover between the cylinder banks. The 115 and 85 were flat covers. The model and serial numbers will be on a welch plug (Quarter-sized disk) on the top of the port cylinder bank. The leading model numbers on a 135 are "135", etc.

That "bubble" type exhaust is what he said he removed. So if I put that bubble plate on I will have a 135?

If it was origionally a 135 then putting the bullbe back exhaust back on should return it to being one. If it is a 115 it will not.

Lots of 115 engines in other years had bubble backs, it really has little to do with the horsepower rating. The 135 ports are larger. The 135 has different orifices.

I really don't know why one would remove the bubbleback in favor of the flatback; it was a much better cooling system.

Probably changed it out due to corrosion because it is a salt water motor. I would be real careful about a motor that old from salt water, it will most likely have serious cooling and corrosion issues.

No reason to guess - get the model number off the welch plug.
