Refurbishing a boat. We took it out last weekend and rode for 2-3 hours. Now when I try to start it in the water, it starts, but shuts off when put into gear. Runs in gear in the front yard, but spits, sputters and backfires, then winds out on its own. Changed spark plugs, cleaned carb, cleaned fuel filter. Using 50/1 ratio gas to oil. Sounds like timing is off. I know it's 24 degrees TDC, but don't know how to adjust. Any ideas?

Timing is probably okay. Sounds like fuel starvation to me, Clueless. "winds out on its own" is classical running out of fuel with no load, as is spitting and coughing. Dies when placed under load is another classic symptom.

Check fuel tank, pickup, hoses, primer bulb and fuel pump.

Good luck.
Red sky at night. . .
JB

Hi Clueless,
Will it run if you maintain pressure on the primer bulb, if not it sounds to me that you have an ignition problem. I'd check the plugs to make sure that they are all firing. you may have bad plug wires, coils, ect...
