I have a rebuilt power head. The carbs have been rebuilt. The motor runs fine wot 5500 rpm,s. After running for a while then comming to an idle, the motor stalls when I try to power back up, If i kind pat the throttle it will catch up and go. The mechanic said there is nothing he can do about the problem. Any ideas? Also I have been told to drill a 1/2 inch hole in the exhaust to relieve more back pressure, What will this do.

Sounds like the carburetor linkage needs to be synched and or the idle fixed orifices are possibly restricted.I know you said the carbs were rebuilt but from where I'm sitting I can't be sure that they are clean and clear and are synched properly unless you can confirm.

I guess my best bet is to pull the carbs and clean them again, I did them once myself, then had the shop do them twice. I now have a inline fuel filter to collect some of the trash that is still in the tanks, I have checked the lync and sync the best I know how. Idle speed in neutral is around 1000.

Since we have the same motor, what I would expect under these conditions is that one or more sets of the low speed capillaries in the floor of the carburetor throats is clogged.

You can check by removing the brass cover screws from the lower side of each throat and blowing carb cleaner through the low speed orifices while observing the back floor of the carb to see if there is an even flow through the four tiny openings under the throttle plate.

Drilling holes in the exhaust is not the thing to do here. The advice seems to indicate a lack of understanding of the operation of the "wet sleeve" exhaust system.

Make sure the trigger plate is advancing freely with the throttle plates from full throttle to idle. Sometimes the wiring can be stiff (or how ever its been routed) causing a late timming advance with the throttle plates opening.

I will check all of that thanks. I did have a used stator put on last year and had to take it back to them because of the slow advance. Maybe it is still not moving quick enough. How much throttle should I be giving before the advance starts.

I pulled the carbs and cleaned them again, I even removed the gas tanks and cleaned them ( what a mess they were) Took her to the lake and ran for just a min. the top carb was leaking fuel pretty bad from under the bowl. I must need to get a new gasket, that one is only a year old. I did put it on ears yesterday to take a look at it and the leak has almost stopped. Guess Ill take it back out tomorrow and try again. In water with the motor all the way down it idles at around 800 rpm. The idle screw is all the way in and the throttle cable is adjusted all the way in. no more room for adjustments.
