1976 15' Silverline Hilo restoration

Hello all, my name is chad and I have to say this website is awesome. Thanks to all of you that share your knowledge and experiance with all of us newbies.

I just bought a 1976 15' silverline Hilo for $300.00. When I first looked at the floor it did not look that bad. Guess I was looking with optimistic eyes, because the floor, stringers and transom are all rotten. Well I needed something to keep me busy, guess I got it. I spent a couple of days reading the posts and it was very helpful. I will have a ton of questions here soon.

So far I have stripped the hull and pulled the cap off. I have cut out most of the two floors. So I will finish cutting out the floor, stringers, foam and transom. Then I will grind everthing down. Everything I know I learned here. Thanks.

I forgot to ask, I have seen Jason's Skanky beast link alot as a good example for a silverline restoration. The link ends up being a dead end. Anyone seen the Skany beast Lately???

Thanks, seeing some of the pictures of everyone elses projects made me hopefully that I could do something with this boat. I have a 45hp mercury classic fifty. I've never run it, but I checked the compression last week and... cylinder 1-3 was 135psi and #4 was 130psi. I read that if you are within 15psi of variation then all is good. Is 135psi good compression for a 45hp?

Here are some pictures of the boat . Day one was dissapointing to find out the extent of the floor damage. And that there were two layers of plywood deck, the last one being liqiud nailed? Must have been a construction worker. The good news is once I get the water-logged foam and two saturated layers of deck out, getting it back to one sheet of 3/4 plwood a/b construction grade??, it should be alot lighter. my 45 merc. might work out fine.

and day two was popping the rub rail off slapping together a staionary hoist and pulling the cap off. Yeah that is what I was thinking, were are my friends when I need a hand? It worked out and gives me plenty of room to do things right.


My Questions :

To make a new transom, I would glue two 3/4" pieces of plywood together, and coat it with a couple of layers of resin?
How is the transom attached to the hull?
Once I make some new stringers and have them glassed onto the hull, I cut the deck and coat it with resin. I fiberglass the floor down, is that what secures it down or does the floor get screwed down.
